（ウィリアム・エモリーの1868年3月2日付、兵庫アメリカ領事館発書簡）

On the 2d Feb / 68 left Osaka Japan in the “Iroquois” having on board the American, Italian and Prussian ministers besides a huge number of foreigners.

（1868年2月2日、イロキス号はアメリカとイタリア、そしてプロイセンの公使、並びに多数の外国人（居留民）を乗せて、日本の大阪を出発した。）

Tycoon’s castle and English Legation in a blaze as well as a large part of the town.

（大君の城とイギリス公使館は街の大部分と同様に炎に包まれた。）

On the night of their arrival at Hiogo, W(illia)m Emory was ordered with ten men to occupy the Custom House where the ministers took up quarters.

（夜に兵庫に到着した際、エモリーは10名の人員と共に公使たちが止宿していた税関を占拠するように命じられた。）

On the 4th / Feb a large body of Japanese troops passing through the place, some of them armed with Enfield rifles when opposite to the foreign reservation began an indiscriminate fire on all foreigners.

（2月4日、大規模な日本軍部隊がその場所を通過し、その際エンフィールド銃で武装した幾人かの兵士が、外国人居留地の反対側で全ての外国人に対して無差別発砲を開始した。）

（数日ののち、ミカド（帝）は使節を（我々の元に）派遣して、タイクーン（大君）に辞任を命じたこと、タイクーンは廃絶されたこと、（したがって外国の）軍隊は撤収されるべきことを望んでいることを伝えさせ、これまで締結された諸条約が保証されることを約束するとともに、先日の（日本兵による）襲撃を謝罪し、かような襲撃を命じた者たちは公開斬首に処せられべきであるという（諸外国からの）要請に応えることを伝えさせた。
